Bastian Schweinsteiger admits that it is a “big honour” for him to line up alongside Wayne Rooney for Manchester United.

Schweinsteiger enjoyed his first taste of first-team action in a United shirt on Friday night as he helped Louis van Gaal’s men secure a 1-0 pre-season win over Club America in Seattle.

The Germany international, who joined the Red Devils from Bayern Munich earlier this month, has been hugely impressed by what he has seen from the England and United captain since his move to the club and was full of praise for the former Everton man.

Schweinsteiger told United’s website: “For me it’s a big honour to play with him in the same team.

“He is a leader, you can see that. He is a fighter, he is a striker, he is everything. I know that. It was also a reason to come here, to play with this kind of player.”

Schweinsteiger is one of four Red Devils signings this summer after Van Gaal signed Dutch winger Memphis Depay, Italy international Matteo Darmian and Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

Manchester United kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on the first weekend of the 2015-16 campaign.
