Three players Chelsea could sign this summer

Shona Duthie takes a look at three players Chelsea could sign in the coming weeks to boost their hopes of defending their title

Raphael Varane

Jose Mourinho has always favoured defender Varane. He once hailed him as the “best young defender in the world”. Since his arrival at the Bernabeu in 2011, the Frenchman has won the European Cup, La Liga, Copa del Rey, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup. It is no surprise that Mourinho would wanted to bring a player of his calibre to Stamford Bridge, Mourinho is likely to want to strengthen his squad to retain their Premier League trophy. Varane is one of the most highest rated young players in Europ and could easily jump ahead of Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma. Varane has worked with Mourinho before as he gave him his debut at such a young age at Madrid. If Chelsea were to try and sign the young starlet, he would not come cheap as he is under contract until 2020. This signing could be the icing on the cake for their defensive line-up and could help them deliver more silverware.

Pedro Rodriquez

It has been reported that Chelsea are back in the hunt for Barcelona forward Pedro. The club has stated they are willing to pay the player’s £21m release clause. With Mourinho looking to cut his losses with Juan Cuadrado, the Chelsea manager is actively looking for his replacement. Pedro could easily fit into this role as it has been suggested the Spanish international is looking to play more first-team football. Pedro is a versatile winger who can also deliver 15-plus goals in one season. The 27-year-old has a lot more to offer and has had a lack of opportunities at Barcelona, a club he has been with since 2004. If the right deal was to come along, it could tempt him to leave Camp Nou.

John Stones

Mourinho is on the lookout for more English talent in his squad – and Everton’s John Stones has become a prime target. It has been suggested that Chelsea could be forced to smash the British transfer record for the defender to move away from Goodison Park. The bidding could reach a staggering £34m as Everton are unwilling to sell the youngster for anything less. Chelsea has already put a bid in the regions of £20m, which was rejected by Everton. Chelsea are likely to put forward a second bid but nothing has been done as of yet. Cahill has made it clear that the centre-half would be welcomed at the Bridge and it looks as though Chelsea are not willing to lose the young English international. Stones would be a great addition to the club as Mourniho looks to keep the players he has and develop for the season ahead.
