Three reasons why Christian Benteke will be Liverpool success

Three reasons why Liverpool signing Christian Benteke will be a success at Anfield following his £32.5m move

By Josh Phillips

Goal-scoring record

Christian Benteke’s goal-scoring record at Aston Villa was impressive, especially as the Birmingham side were constantly in the lower reaches of the Premier League. In his first season in England, he bagged 19 goals in 34 appearances, suggesting the Liverpool faithful won’t have to wait long to see the best of the Belgian striker. In all competitions over the last three seasons, Benteke found the net 49 times in 101 outings, a superb strike-rate for any top-flight striker. Prior to his Villa Park days, the 24-year-old enjoyed a fruitful spell in the Belgian League with Genk where he found the net 19 times in 37 appearances, once again managing almost a goal every other game.

Playing with better players

Reds fans will be hoping that if Benteke can be so prolific for a side struggling to battle relegation, he can surpass his record 19 goals in the 2012/13 seaosn at Anfield next term. The Belgium international will benefit from better service from the likes of Roberto Firmino, Phillipe Coutinho and Adam Lallana. While Benteke will undoubtedly want to be starting games on a weekly basis, the array of striking options at Brendan Rodgers’s disposal means that Liverpool will not be relying solely on the Belgian to score the team’s goals, unlike at Aston Villa did. That said, the £32.5m transfer fee dictates that there will be a certain amount of pressure on the Zaire-born striker.

Hunger

It’s amazing to think that Benteke was just 21 when he burst onto the Premier League scene for Villa in the 2012/13 season. His raw pace, power and finishing ability saw him instantly marked as one to watch. Three years on, it’s easy to forget that Benteke is still just 24 and has his best years ahead of him. As part of one of the best Belgian squad of all-time, the 6ft 3ins striker will want to prove himself at the top of the Premier League and also in Europe in order to cement his starting berth for the national team.
