Three reasons why Man Utd shouldn’t sign Pedro Rodriguez

Three reasons why Barcelona winger Pedro Rodriguez wouldn't be a good signing for Manchester United

By Josh Phillips

Current wing options

When Manchester United opt to play with wingers this season, Louis van Gaal already has an array of talent at his disposal. Angel Di Maria, Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia, and of course new boy, Memphis Depay, can all play in the wing position. It is hard to see, therefore, where Pedro could fit into the side. Most United fans would agree that signing another winger is far from a priority and that Van Gaal should be trying to shore up his porous defence. However, if Di Maria were to leave Old Trafford, the signing of Pedro would make more sense.

Physical deficiencies

Standing at just 5ft 5 ½ ins, it’s fair to say that Pedro is a diminutive figure. While that’s not to say that the Spaniard couldn’t be a hit in a physical league such as the Premier League, there is a certain amount of risk involved as many top players have come to these shores to find the going too tough and not suited to their game. United found this out last season with the signing of Di Maria who never really adjusted to the game due, in part, to his lack of physical strength and tendency to be pushed off the ball.

Style of play

Pedro joined Barcelona at the young age of 17 and for the past 10 years of his life has known nothing but ‘the Barca way’. So whichever club he moves onto, there is a big chance that he will struggle to adapt to another team’s style of play. This would be of particular concern at a team like United, who play a much more direct and powerful style of football to Barcelona. Perhaps Pedro would be more suited to a patient attacking build up such as that of Arsenal for instance. If Di Maria were to depart, United would be better off looking at a more ‘old school’ winger as opposed to a tiki-taka wideman like Pedro.
