It’s no secret that Tottenham are trying to sign Toby Alderweireld from Ateltico Madrid and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy should do everything in his power to sign the Belgian international ahead of league rivals Southampton. Alderweireld was on loan at St Mary’s last season and was immense at centre-half as the Saints recorded 11 clean sheets. He is strong, quick and his distribution is excellent which suits Tottenham’s style of play. He has the potential to form an extremely classy partnership with Jan Vertonghen as Mauricio Pochettino encourages building from the back. His versatility is another attractive trait as he performs equally well at right-back for Belgium and can even perform in a holding-midfield role. £11.5m is the figure being quoted, which is cheap when you consider the state of the market and the sale of Paulinho to Guangzhou Evergrande could pay for the majority of that fee.
The Congolese centre-half had another brilliant season at Anderlecht and is available for transfer this summer. At 20-years-old, Mbemba is a long-term investment but already plays like the finished article as demonstrated in this season’s Champions League. He is incredibly fast and would be able to keep up with most Premier League strikers. He prides himself on the timing of his tackles and has previously said he doesn’t even see the opponent, only the ball. Borussia Mönchengladbach and Atletico Madrid are both interested but the player is supposedly keen on a move to England. At £9m, he has the potential to be a real bargain.
The Tunisian centre-half was exceptional for Monaco last season and played a significant role as they kept five clean sheets in the Uefa Champions League. He is extremely physical and would relish the opportunity to battle with centre-forwards in the mould of Diego Costa. West Ham are reportedly interested and the player is available for around £14m. Abdennour is an old fashioned defender and prioritises breaking up attacks over style of play. He could be just the player to give Tottenham that hard edge they have been lacking in recent seasons.
