Asmir Begovic says Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is the best coach in the world despite the Blues’s poor start to the Premier League season.

The defending English champions are languishing in 16th place in the Premier League table after a 3-1 loss to Southampton at Stamford Bridge before the international break.

It’s a long season, we know in football these things happen, even to the best teams; we need to keep fighting and hopefully things will turn for us, our performances and our luck

Chelsea are already 10 points behind current Premier League leaders Manchester City after a return of eight points from a possible 24 after eight top-flight games.

But Blues shot stopper Begovic, who moved to Chelsea in an £8m deal from Stoke City in the summer transfer window, has faith that Mourinho can reverse the west London side’s form.

“He’s not happy, of course. He doesn’t want to lose. He wouldn’t have won all the trophies he has, and become the best manager in the world, to be happy with how things are going,” Begovic is quoted as saying by The Guardian.

“But at the same time he has kept calm, tried to keep things on the ground, make sure we don’t feel sorry for ourselves, and pick things up. It’s a long season, we know in football these things happen, even to the best teams; we need to keep fighting and hopefully things will turn for us, our performances and our luck.

“That’s the only comforting thing: we have the best manager in the world. We believe in him and he believes in us. We will turn things around.”

Begovic has been deputising in the absence of injured Chelsea number one Thibaut Courtois.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina international has made six appearances in the Premier League this season.
