The versatile Liverpool man scored the Reds’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with 10-man Rubin Kazan in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The Germany international was used at centre-half and right-back by Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers last season.
I’ve known him for some years and I know he is usually a midfield player but he can play any role
However, the former Borussia Dortmund manager has reverted 22-year-old Can back to his orthodox midfield position.
Speaking at his post-match media conference, Klopp underlined that he views Can as a midfielder, although he added the German’s versatility is a bonus.
“I think he is a midfield player but of course he can play different positions and that’s the good thing with Emre.
“At this moment, I don’t know who can play on Sunday again and maybe Emre will play in another position. I hope he can play and then we will think about this.
“I’ve known him for some years and I know he is usually a midfield player but he can play any role.
“With the German national team he played full-back, and if we give him more time he can play there, but most of the time, in his youth, he has played in midfield.”
Liverpool have drawn three successive games in the Europa League after failing to beat Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, Swiss outfit Sion and Russia team Rubin Kazan.
The Reds are still waiting for their first victory under their new 48-year-old manager after a goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League last weekend.
Liverpool welcome Southampton at Anfield on Sunday.
