The Reds travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday lunchtime as the German coach takes charge of his first game since being appointed as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield last week.
Klopp will be looking for his team to get off to a winning start when they take on Spurs at White Hart Lane this weekend.
However, former Arsenal star Merson feels that the home side will have too much for the Merseyside outfit, and is backing Spurs to secure a 2-1 win over the Reds in north London.
Merson told Sky Sports: “I think this is a hard first game for Jurgen Klopp. Everyone has been away on international duty, and I can see Spurs winning here.
“He has not had enough time with the players to get his message across.
“It will be exciting seeing him in the dugout in the Premier League, but his mood in Thursday’s press conference was different to his first conference.
“It’s different over here, and he will need to get used to it.”
Liverpool head into the game on the back of their 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park before the international break, which was Rodgers’ final game in charge of the Anfield outfit.
Spurs are currently one point ahead of Liverpool in the table.
