Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool won’t rush Daniel Sturridge back into first-team action after the striker declared himself fit following their Boxing Day win.

The England international was named in Klopp’s match-day squad for their 1-0 victory over Leicester City despite taking part in first-team training on Christmas Eve.

Sturridge made a fleeting return to the Liverpool side in early December after the striker scored twice in a 6-1 victory over Southampton in the League Cup.

However, the 26-year-old picked up his latest injury after coming off the bench in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat by Newcastle United at St James’s Park earlier this month.

Speaking at his post-match media conference following Sturridge’s Twitter update, Klopp confirmed that the striker was fully recovered but underlined that Liverpool must show caution.

“I think it’s absolutely the same thing that Daniel said four weeks ago,” Klopp said.

“And then we let him play and then you ask him and he will say this. I know he is ready – that’s good.

“Now he has to train, we cannot change the situation. We have to train now with him.

“Last week and this week are the most intensive weeks for Daniel Sturridge for the last three years. So you can see what we have to do.”

Sturridge moved to Liverpool from Chelsea in a £12m deal in January 2013.
