Manchester United

David De Gea (man of the match) Great close-range stop to push Terry’s header over the crossbar early in the first half. Brilliant double save to deny Pedro and then Azpilicueta. 9/10

Daley Blind The Dutch defender was solid alongside Smalling at centre-half as he started ahead of Phil Jones. 7

Chris Smalling Looked nervous, as highlighted by a poor pass which gave Chelsea the chance to counter. 6

Matteo Darmian Italy’s right-back of the year looked dangerous on the left-side of the United defence. He teamed up with Martial to torment Ivanovic. 8

Ashley Young Good clearance in the opening minutes. Another important tackle on Azpilicueta. 7

Morgan Schneiderlin The summer signing was restored to Louis van Gaal’s side and he fizzed a low shot narrowly wide in ninth minute. Booked for a 50/50 challenge on Willian. 7

Bastian Schweinsteiger The weak-link for United in the first half. Caught on the ball or guilty of a mistimed tackle. However, he wasn’t punished as Chelsea dropped off. 6

Juan Mata The former Chelsea midfielder hit the crossbar to rally the Old Trafford crowd in the opening minutes. A good performance against his former club before he sacrificed for Memphis. 7

Ander Herrera Escaped a booking for a naughty tackle on Willian. He was denied by Courtois with the goal at his mercy inside the nine-year area. 7

Wayne Rooney The Red Devils captain led the United charge in the first half. Looked dangerous for the first time in months, forcing a full-stretch save from Courtois from long range. Couldn’t convert a late chance. 8

Anthony Martial Europe’s young player of the year surged past Ivanovic before hitting the woodwork. Wanted a penalty when his slalom run was brought to a halt by Zouma. 8

Memphis Depay N/A

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson Great cross for Rooney but the striker couldn’t keep his finish on target. 6

Phil Jones N/A

Thibaut Courtois Some poor distribution almost cost Chelsea midway through the first half. Brilliant block to deny Herrera when it looked like the United midfielder couldn’t miss. 8

Branislav Ivanovic United looked to target below-par Ivanovic. The Serbian spent most of the night running back towards his own goal chasing Darmian or Martial. 5

John Terry He was denied a fifth-minute opener by a fine save from De Gea. The Chelsea skipper will take heart from a rare clean sheet. 6

Kurt Zouma The French defender looked edgy against a resurgent United attack. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta A shaky start like the rest of his Chelsea defence. He was denied by De Gea’s brilliant reactions after the break. 6

Nemanja Matic Through on goal with the best chance of the game but fired high over the crossbar. A very poor attempt. 6

John Obi Mikel Booked for a cynical foul on Martial. The Nigerian did little of note, otherwise. 6

Willian He couldn’t capitalise on a Smalling’s poor pass with United out-of-position. He was taken off with 22 minutes to go. 6

Oscar Lost the ball in a dangerous position but recovered with a good tackle – would he have shown such desire under Jose Mourinho? 6

Eden Hazard Glimpses of the Hazard from last season but the forward’s passing was often sloppy. 6

Pedro Rodriguez As we’ve come to expect from the Barcelona legend, Pedro was lively. Denied by De Gea’s reflexes at the start of the second half. 7

Ramires N/A

Ruben Loftus-Cheek N/A
