The Reds returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Boxing Day as Christian Benteke’s second-half goal handed Jurgen Klopp’s men the three points against leaders Leicester City at Anfield.
Liverpool have the luxury of an extra two days off as they prepare for their clash against Sam Allardyce’s Black Cats on Wednesday.
Klopp’s men head into the game in eighth place in the Premier League table and five points behind fifth-placed Tottenham, who travel to Watford on Monday afternoon.
However, despite the Reds’ win at the weekend, Merson feels that Allardyce’s men are likely to get something from the game.
Merson told Sky Sports: “This is a very important game for both sides. It depends on what Liverpool turn up, if we get the side that beat Leicester, then Sunderland have their work cut out to get anything.
“They are a bag of Revels at the moment, though. I’m going to back Sunderland to get something but I would not be surprised if Liverpool won.”
Liverpool have recorded impressive away victories against the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea since Klopp’s appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield back in October.
