The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the midfielder and are understood to have already agreed a deal to sign the 23-year-old, with work permit issues proving the only stumbling block in the transfer being completed.
However, speaking after Arsenal’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Sunderland at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, Wenger confirmed that the north London side are on the cusp of announcing their first signing of the January transfer window.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Saturday afternoon, Wenger said: “We hope to announce a player in the next 24 to 48 hours.
“I don’t need to tell you the name. After that we will see [about other deals].”
Arsenal are now turning their attentions back to the Premier League and their crunch top-flight clash against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Wenger’s men are currently two points clear at the top of the Premier League table heading into their trip to Merseyside.
