Ian Wright has urged Arsenal to make a bid to sign John Stones from Everton during the January transfer window.

The Gunners have enjoyed a positive start to the year after they recorded a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at Emirates Stadium to move two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Many are tipping Arsenal to be genuine Premier League title contenders along with Manchester City this season, although some feel that Arsene Wenger will need to bolster his squad during the current transfer window to boost their hopes of lifting the top-flight trophy.

And former Arsenal striker Wright concedes that England international Stones would be a great addition at The Emirates to add competition for the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.

Speaking on the 606 programme on BBC Radio 5 Live, Wright said: “I think Stones could play in a top team in any country.

“He is the kind of ball-playing defender Wenger would like. Would I love to see him there [Arsenal]? Of course I would.
