Arsene Wenger has revealed that Mesut Ozil has been struggling with a foot injury in recent days and says that he took a gamble by playing the Germany international in last week’s 3-3 draw at Liverpool.

Ozil was left out of the Arsenal squad as the Gunners were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The 27-year-old playmaker has been a central figure in Arsenal’s title bid this season, having notched up 16 assists for his team-mates so far in the top flight.

Speaking after Sunday’s draw, Wenger revealed that he had simply opted not to gamble on Ozil’s fitness after he had struggled with a minor foot injury in recent weeks.

Wenger told his post-match news conference at the Britannia Stadium: “He had an inflammation on his foot and yesterday morning we looked and he was not very well.

“He was not 100 per cent at Liverpool so I decided to leave him out. I think he should be back for next Sunday.”
