Brendan Rodgers believes Tottenham Hotspur are Premier League title contenders this season.

Christian Eriksen cancelled out Patrick van Aanholt’s 40th-minute opener ahead of half-time against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon before Mousa Dembele edged Spurs into a 2-1 lead with a half hour to play.

Eriksen gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side a two-goal cushion before Harry Kane scored a 79th-minute penalty to seal a 4-1 victory over Sunderland after Wednesday night’s 1-0 loss to Leicester.

Former Liverpool manager Rodgers, who led the Reds to a second-place finish in 2014, explained why he reckons Spurs are title contenders.

“I definitely do [consider Spurs title contenders],” Rodgers told Sky Sports.

“They’ve got good consistency. They’ve got a lot of young players that are hungry.

“They’ve got a way of working that is working well for them. They’ve got goals in their team, Harry Kane will get goals.”

Rodgers also praised Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino for placing his faith in young England players, such as Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Kane, since taking over the reins at White Hart Lane in 2014.

“He has done very, very well. He did a great job at Southampton,” Rodgers continued.

“His first year at Spurs was about getting his ideas onto the team. The second season now, they’re playing very, very well.

“He has given all the young England lads a chance. He has trusted them.”

Tottenham, who finished fifth last season, are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table and four points ahead of West Ham in fifth.
