Brendan Rodgers has leapt to the defence of Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

The Belgium international has faced criticism this season after a string of errors under Rodgers and his successor, Jurgen Klopp.

The Merseyside outfit are reportedly preparing to offer the shot stopper a five-year deal despite his error-strewn performances.

Former Liverpool manager Rodgers, who signed Mignolet in 2013, lifted the lid on his relationship with Mignolet, while he also spoke about his decision to drop the Belgian during the 2014/15 season.

“Simon is a fantastic keeper,” Rodgers told Sky Sports.

“There was one period where I wanted to take him out of the team. We spoke a lot during that time out. He came back in and played very well. It was taking the pressure of him.

“We spoke and Simon felt himself it was a good thing. When he came back in, he was refocused. In fairness to him, he took it very well.

“He worked very, very hard. He is a top-class goalkeeper and a good man as well.”

Rodgers signed Mignolet in a £9m deal from Sunderland in the summer of 2013.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper has already racked up 121 appearances for the Merseyside outfit during two-and-a-half seasons at Anfield.

The Reds shot stopper was voted as Liverpool’s player of the year by the club’s former players for the 2014/15 season.
