The England teenager has been one of the Premier League’s star performers this season and scored a wonder-goal to help Tottenham secure a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace last weekend.
Comparisons to myself are not something I want to get into
Alli has earned plenty of new admirers for his fine performances for Tottenham this season, scoring six goals and making four assists in 21 Premier League games to help Spurs up to fourth place in the table and five points behind leaders Leicester.
However, although former Tottenham midfielder has been thoroughly impressed by what he has seen from Alli this season, he does not want to see the 19-year-old compared to any other players – past or present.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Hoddle said: “There is always a lot of hype around young players who catch the eye and that is especially the case when they are English.
“Comparisons to myself are not something I want to get into and it would not help him to be compared to anyone.”
“He should be viewed as a great young talent in his own right and I’m not too surprised to see how well he is doing this season because I saw him at MK Dons last season and he always looked so calm on the ball, so comfortable in his surroundings.
“It is a big step up to the Premier League from where he was playing in League One last season, but the lad has handled it so well and he looks to be the kind of player who can do the things most players don’t dream about.
“He does things differently, offers you that unpredictability and players like that can be so valuable.”
Tottenham travel to Colchester in the FA Cup on Saturday lunchtime looking to book their place in the fifth round of the competitions.
