Joey Barton believes Steven Caulker needs to settle down and get his career back on track after moving to Liverpool earlier this week.

The one-time England international joined the Reds on loan from Queens Park Rangers for the remainder of the season on Tuesday afternoon after his Southampton spell was cut short.

Caulker made his Liverpool debut just over 24 hours later in their 3-3 draw with Premier League leaders Arsenal on Wednesday night after he came on as a late substitute at Anfield.

His former QPR team-mate Barton believes Caulker has good potential, but questioned the defender’s frequent transfer moves over the past couple of seasons.

“I remember him getting in the Olympic squad. Steve has all the attributes to be a really good, centre-half,” Barton told BT Sport.

“I remember him coming into QPR last year, and I was thinking he was Cardiff’s captain and they went down. He had a season at QPR and we had the worst defensive record, psychologically what does that do to you. He was in the side for the 6-1 against Liverpool.

“He needs to find a club and settle down. You can only jump from club to club for so long.”

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp signed Caulker to ease Liverpool’s defensive woes following injuries to Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho over the past month.
