The Reds have been linked with a host of players as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his squad during the January transfer window.
Various media outlets had suggested that Schalke defender Matip, 24, could be a January transfer target for the Merseyside outfit.
However, the Daily Mail is now reporting that Liverpool are more likely to wait until the summer before making a move for the 24-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season and free to talk to foreign clubs.
The Cameroon international is a product of Schalke’s youth academy and has made 240 appearances for the Bundesliga in all competitions.
Klopp watched his Liverpool side book their place in the League Cup final on Tuesday night thanks to a penalty shootout win over Stoke City at Anfield.
The Reds take on West Ham in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening.
