Manchester United are reportedly readying a £15m bid to sign midfielder Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid

Manchester United are lining up a £15m bid to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

Louis van Gaal is thought to be on the lookout for reinforcements this month after United came in for criticism for another lacklustre display during the 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Saturday.

United have been linked with a move for Niguez in recent weeks, and Spanish journalist Antonio Ruiz has now claimed that the Red Devils are keen to sign the central midfielder in a deal worth £15m, either during the January transfer window or in the summer.

The 21-year-old Niguez has scored five goals and made one assist in 18 appearances for Atletico so far this season.

Ruiz, who works for Spanish broadcaster Cope, tweeted via his employers:

United have won their first two games of 2016 despite coming in for criticism for their lack of attacking intent in recent weeks.

The Red Devils beat Swansea City 2-1 at Anfield earlier this month after a run of eight games without a win in all competitions.
