Manchester United are lining up a £40m bid for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, according to reports.

Louis van Gaal is believed to be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements following the exits of the likes of Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck in recent seasons.

The Daily Mirror reports that United are poised to make a number of big-name signings during the summer transfer window – and Belgian forward Lukaku is high on their list of targets.

Lukaku has been in fine form for Everton so far this season, scoring 12 times in his last 12 games and netting a total of 19 goals in all competitions so far this term.

And the forward’s sparkling displays are understood to have caught the eye of United, who are now preparing a summer bid for the former Chelsea man.

The Red Devils are unlikely to make a bid for the Everton star this month, instead opting to wait until the end of the season, when a flurry of transfer activity is expected.
