The Red Devils have been linked with a £42m offer for the promising Brazil international in recent weeks as Louis van Gaal attempts to bolster his attacking options.
If you’re going to pay £40m for a guy who can’t get into the Lazio team that worries me
The 22-year-old South American has been in decent for the Italian club so far this season, scoring five goals and making one assist in 19 appearances in Serie A.
However, former United midfielder Hargreaves isn’t convinced Anderson is worth his touted £40m fee after having watched the Brazilian in Lazio’s Champions League qualifiers earlier this season.
Hargreaves told BT Sport: “United might take a gamble. They don’t need a No10. What they need is pace in wide areas.
“I saw Felipe Anderson twice against Leverkusen in qualifiers. He played very poorly.
“By his own admission, he is going through a poor patch.

Earlier this week, Lazio sporting director Igli Tare was adamant that there has been no concrete offer from the 20-time English champions in the January transfer window after United made a big-money offer in August.
“We turned down a €50m offer from Manchester United on August 27 and nothing has changed since then, because if he finds consistency, then he’s worth much more,” Tare is quoted as saying by Daily Mail.
“We also resisted bigger offers than that, but we have targets to achieve.”
The Red Devils have also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane and Southampton forward Sadio Mane in the January transfer window.
