The England international has struggled to find any sort of form in the Liverpool side despite Jurgen Klopp sticking with the 27-year-old since taking over the reins at Anfield in October.
A big, big club seems to be dwarfing him
Lallana, who moved to Anfield in a £25m deal from Southampton in 2014, hasn’t scored a Premier League goal in 18 top-flight appearances so far this season.
Former Chelsea and Everton winger Nevin reckons Lallana is lacking confidence and is going to struggle to rekindle his old form unless he returns to a smaller club.
“After watching him coming through, you’re thinking wow, this player is going to be special,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“It’s my least favourite word, but he has real technical ability, which is great. You do understand the game.
“Suddenly, he is lacking confidence. He may well go to another club of the ilk of Southampton and be great again. But a big, big club seems to be dwarfing him.”
Lallana scored 12 goals in 68 Premier League games during Southampton’s first two seasons back in the top-flight between 2012 and 2014.
Discussing Lallana’s performances for Southampton in the English top flight, Nevin said: “He was super. He was absolutely great.”
Lallana has netted 68 times in 337 games in all competitions during his playing career.
The former Saints skipper could feature against Exeter City in the FA Cup third-round replay at Anfield.
