The Lilywhites returned to winning ways in convincing fashion on Saturday lunchtime as they thrashed Sunderland 4-1 at White Hart Lane to keep themselves in fourth place in the Premier League table.
Spurs, who have been tipped as outsiders to win the Premier League title by many this season, have inevitably been linked with a host of players this month as Mauricio Pochettino considers bolstering his squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.
Former Arsenal man Merson has been thoroughly impressed by striker Harry Kane’s performances for the north London side this season.
However, he feels that Spurs must look to bring in some cover for the England international in the coming weeks.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday, Merson said: “Harry Kane looked a little bit tired the other day. It’s catching up with him – he plays every game and he plays a certain way. He’s not a player that just stands in the box, he works as hard as anybody on the football pitch. He probably runs as much as anybody.
“I just think that the longer this season goes on… it’s a hard season, they’re still in the Europa League, the FA Cup. I think they need someone.
“The problem is that everybody needs a centre-forward. You can go from Arsenal all the way down to Aston Villa – everybody if they could would get a centre-forward in. The problem is getting that right centre-forward who’s not going to upset that very good team spirit at Tottenham.”
Tottenham are four points ahead of fifth-placed West Ham.
