Peter Schmeichel has ruled Manchester United out of the Premier League title race.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways in the top flight on Sunday afternoon as they snatched a 1-0 victory at Liverpool thanks to Wayne Rooney’s late goal at Anfield.

The result lifted Louis van Gaal’s men up to fifth place in the Premier League table and two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

United are now seven points behind leaders Arsenal as they look to climb the top-flight table.

But former United goalkeeper Schmeichel says that the Red Devils can forget about finishing top of the table this season.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Sunday’s game at Anfield, Schmeichel said: “I don’t think they can win the title. I don’t think the team is good enough and they don’t enjoy playing the way they do. It was three lucky points today.”

He continued: “Van Gaal is very keen on telling us that they have done what they have trained, so praising himself.

“But if that’s the style of play that Man United has to play, then I don’t think they can win the league because you have to be really lucky every game.”
