Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Nemanja Vidic was out-of-depth when the defender joined Manchester United.

The former Serbia international announced his retirement from professional football on Friday afternoon after an injury-hit spell.

Vidic moved to United from Spartak Moscow in January 2006 before he struck up an impressive partnership with then England defender Ferdinand.

After a slow start to his career, Ferdinand and Vidic won five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League as a pair.

Writing on Facebook after Vidic announced his retirement on Friday, 37-year-old Ferdinand explained why the Serbian was his best-ever centre-half partner.

The former United captain played for the 20-time English for eight years between January 2006 to May 2014.

Vidic called time on his Red Devils career following the appointment of David Moyes in 2013 and completed a free transfer to Inter Milan.
