Rio Ferdinand heaped praise on David De Gea and Wayne Rooney after Manchester United eased to a 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

The Spain international made four saves at Anfield on Sunday afternoon as the United number one denied Emre Can and Roberto Fimrino.

United captain Wayne Rooney, 30, scored a 79th-minute winner to seal three points for the Red Devils on Merseyside.

Former Red Devils defender Ferdinand, who scored the winner in the north-west derby during his playing career, thanked De Gea and Rooney for making his week a little bit easier.

United have won their last five games against bitter rivals Liverpool since the Reds’s last win at Old Trafford in 2014.

The Red Devils hoisted themselves into fifth place in the Premier League table and moved to within two points of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur after Sunday’s win.
