The Reds head into the game looking to bounce back from the disappointment of their FA Cup exit at the hands of West Ham United at Upton Park in midweek.
Liverpool have struggled to find consistent form under Jurgen Klopp since his appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield back in October.
The Reds squandered a two-goal lead as they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with Sunderland at Anfield last weekend.
And former Arsenal man Merson is backing the home side to snatch a surprise win over the Reds and heap further misery on Klopp.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “This game is all about timing and this is perfect time for Aston Villa to be facing Liverpool.
“Jurgen Klopp’s team have just been beaten over 120 minutes in the FA Cup and they’ve got the Europa League coming up on Thursday – for me their only chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
“Liverpool have to put all their eggs into one basket with the Europa League so I see Villa winning on Sunday.
“If Villa can win this game, and reduce the gap to five or six points, then suddenly they’re back in with a slim chance of staying up.
“Liverpool have been poor when defending set plays and that is where Villa look a threat, I fancy Joleon Lescott to bag the winner.”
Liverpool, who take on Manchester City in the League Cup final later this month, are currently ninth in the Premier League table and 12 points adrift of the top four.
