Charlie Nicholas says Manchester United are petrified of sacking Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to Premier League strugglers Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last weekend to leave Van Gaal’s six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

They’re buying time for Louis van Gaal – the only thing that’s keeping him there

United were embarrassed in the Europa League on Thursday night after a 2-1 loss to Danish side FC Midtjylland in the first leg of their last-32 tie.

The 20-time English champions make the trip to League One side Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas reckons United are scared to sack Van Gaal following the reaction when the Red Devils axed David Moyes in 2014.

Nicholas told Sky Sports: “Ed Woodward’s hands are tied. He’s almost got to go back to the Glazers and say: ‘What is the situation, what do you want me to do?’

“It seems there are too many chiefs at Manchester United. I think they’re buying time at the football club because they’re petrified after the reaction to David Moyes getting the sack. Now they’ve got a man with a CV which they thought was enough for them, but it’s proving to be incorrect.

“At this time, they’re buying time for Louis van Gaal – the only thing that’s keeping him there, it seems, are the American owners.”

The Red Devils have lost their last two games in all competitions and have only won two of their last six following a miserable run over the past three months.
