The Blues head into the game fresh from their 1-1 draw with Manchester United in west London last weekend as Guus Hiddink’s men were forced to come from behind to snatch a point.
Chelsea have struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League all season and head into Sunday’s game in 13th place in the Premier League table.
The west London side have shown signs of improvement under interim boss Guus Hiddink but the Blues have still only won three of their last 10 top flight games.
However, former Arsenal man Merson expects the Blues to have too much for the visiting Magpies on Saturday and is expecting to see a comfortable home win.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Newcastle played really last week against West Brom and could have won by four or five. But, in the end, it was only 1-0 and West Brom had a chance to equalise late on, so it’s worrying they didn’t put the game to bed.
“Chelsea are a different side now the players want to have a go, they have really picked up under Guus Hiddink.
“I’ve got to take Newcastle’s dismal showing at Everton last week into consideration though, so I’m backing Chelsea here.
“Newcastle’s away form has a greater influence than their impressive home performances.
Chelsea will turn their attentions to the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain next week after Saturday’s game.
