The Gunners were beaten by the Red Devils at Old Trafford as the north London side failed to click into gear.
Two goals from Marcus Rashford on his Premier League debut and one from Ander Herrera proved the difference for the Red Devils against Arsenal, who found the net through Danny Welbeck and Mesut Ozil but were unable to conjure an equaliser.
The result left Arsenal five points behind leaders Leicester and three adrift of Tottenham heading into the final 11 games of the season.
And it is fair to say that former Liverpool man Souness was less than impressed by what he saw from Arsene Wenger’s men on Sunday.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the final whistle, Souness said: “Arsenal, today, bordered on being a joke, for me.
“You turn up here, you’re playing against a Man United team that are struggling because of their injuries, they’re introducing young players, their confidence is low – and you’re thinking it’s tailor-made for a proper team to come here and really do a number on a very under-strength Man United – and they didn’t.
“This is an Arsenal team that we were saying a month ago were a real team. Arsene Wenger must be tearing his hair out.
“There is a word I want to use that I can’t use, which describes a lack of something that real players have. This Arsenal team lack it in abundance, just don’t have it. None.
“And I’ll stand on my head if they prove me wrong and go and win this league, because that was totally unacceptable.”
Arsenal host Swansea on Wednesday night.
