Liverpool confirmed a deal to sign the Cameroon defender this week and will bring him to the Merseyside club on a free transfer when his contract at Schalke expires at the end of the season.
It marks Liverpool’s first summer signing, with many tipping the Reds to be one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s first full season in charge at Anfield.
And former Liverpool star Barnes was happy to see the confirmation of Matip’s arrival this week.
Writing in his blog for Titanbet, Barnes said: “Even though the January window is closed, Liverpool cannot be kept out of the transfer headlines.
“Joel Matip’s move to Anfield this summer has been sealed, and I for one am excited about seeing him in the Red shirt.
“He’s a very good defender with strength and pace, and getting him on a free transfer really is great business.
“We’ll see in the summer the extent that the club are willing to back Klopp, though.”
Liverpool, who drew 0-0 with Augsburg in the Europa League on Thursday, have a weekend off as they gear up for their League Cup final showdown with Manchester City at Wembley later this month.
