The Portuguese coach has been relentlessly linked with the managerial job at Old Trafford following the speculation surrounding Louis van Gaal’s future at the club.
United’s 2-1 defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday night has only served to heighten the uncertainty surrounding Van Gaal’s position.
Mourinho has been touted as a possible candidate to take over from Van Gaal at Old Trafford since his sacking by Chelsea back in December.
However, Spanish football expert Balague insists that there is no deal in place for the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid coach to take over at United – and warned that until there is formal contact, Mourinho could end up heading to another club.
Balague told Sky Sports on Friday: “I keep saying it every week… at this particular time, right now, there is no agreement with Mourinho, at all.
“The message that has come in from his camp is that unless they call him now and agree something, he may go to another club.
“That’s the message he is sending via the media.”
Manchester United, who are fifth in the Premier League, take on Shrewsbury Town in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday night.
