The German midfielder has been out of action since suffering a knee injury during the 1-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United in January.
Jones has also recently been sidelined and picked up a fresh injury while playing for Uniter’s Under-21 side this week.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Friday afternoon, Van Gaal revealed that both Jones and Schweinsteiger would miss Saturday’s game, with Adnan Januzaj and Guillermo Varela also picking up injuries,
The Dutchman also delivered positive updates on long-term absentees Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia.
Van Gaal said at his news conference on Friday: “It’s not looking good because I also let my players play in the second team and various players were injured again.
“They’re not very nasty injuries but I still have to give them time to recover.
“It is a big pity because Jones is a very good central defender and we are missing him and also Marcos Rojo for a long time already.
“I cannot say Bastian is returning within two weeks because I have given him, more or less, a little holiday as he also has to change his mindset. It’s good for players. I have done that also with Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw, for example, when you are injured for longer than normal.
“The light at the end of the tunnel is more for Rojo and for Valencia. They are coming back and I hope it’s as soon as possible.”
United head into Saturday’s game looking to return to winning ways after disappointment of their 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
The Red Devils are currently fifth in the Premier League table.
