The Belgium international continued his error-strewn season on Saturday after the shot stopper failed to keep out Adam Johnson’s free-kick in a 2-2 draw with Sunderland at Anfield.
There is still so much more that can come out of Simon Mignolet
Mignolet was rewarded with a new five-year contract extension last month despite his inconsistent form for the Merseyside outfit over the course of the season.
However, James, who defended Mignolet in an exclusive interview with The Sport Review at the start of the season, insisted the Belgian shot stopper will improve over the course of his new contract.
“I think it [the criticism] is unfounded,” James told talkSPORT.
“You could argue having been three years at Liverpool he should be the finished article but there is still so much more that can come out of Simon Mignolet and therefore the five-year contract he got is justified.”
Christian Benteke was also criticised for a poor performance in Liverpool’s 2-1 extra-time defeat by West Ham United in their FA Cup fourth-round replay at Upton Park on Tuesday night.
But James, who won the League Cup with Liverpool during his Anfield career, is adamant that the striker has a future under Jurgen Klopp.
“I have been impressed with him over the last couple of cup matches,” James added.
“His footwork at times [against West Ham] was exceptional. That is not something I associate too often with Benteke – his aerial prowess everyone is aware of.”
“But I see improvement. Jurgen Klopp has this ideology of improving players and I see improvement in Benteke.”
