Paul Merson is confidently backing Liverpool to beat Manchester City and lift the League Cup trophy at Wembley on Sunday.

The Reds take on the Citizens in north London looking to win their first piece of silverware since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as manager back in October.

Liverpool warmed up for Sunday’s showdown with a 1-0 victory over Augsburg in the Europa League on Thursday night.

City, meanwhile, were 3-1 winners over Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Merseyside outfit will desperate to lift a trophy in Klopp’s first season in charge at Anfield.

And former Arsenal star Merson is backing the Reds to triumph over the Sky Blues at Wembley – especially if they are able to make a fast start.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Friday afternoon, Merson said: “If Liverpool start well, Liverpool win it.

“The longer the game goes on, I think Man City will have just a little bit too much.

“But I think Liverpool will win.”
