Louis van Gaal admitted that Manchester United now face an uphill task in securing a top-four finish this season after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Sunderland.

The Red Devils slumped to a disappointing defeat at the Stadium of light to leave them fifth in the Premier League table and six points behind Manchester City, but the gap to the top four could be as much as nine points after this weekend’s round of fixtures.

“It shall be very difficult now, because we gave five points away – Chelsea and today. It’s too much at this time,” Van Gaal told BT Sport after the game.

Wahbi Khazri put Sam Allardyce’s men in front in the third minute at the Stadium of Light when his free-kick crept past David De Gea in the Manchester United goal.

United drew level before half-time when Anthony Martial fired into the bottom left corner from close range.

However, the Black Cats secured the three points when Lamine Kone’s header bounced in off De Gea’s back in the 82nd minute.

Asked about his own future at the club, Van Gaal insisted that he is only focused on helping Manchester United improve their form.

He continued: “No [I’m not under more pressure], I have to do my work, and I do my work to my utmost best. I cannot do more.

“I shall prepare my players at 100 per cent and I shall do that always.”
