Christian Benteke isn’t the long-term answer for Liverpool, according to Mark Lawrenson.

The Reds striker failed to score as Liverpool played out a goalless draw with West Ham United in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Nobody is doubting his ability, he’s just a different centre-forward than what the manager envisages

Benteke has only started 11 of Jurgen Klopp’s 27 games in charge of the Merseyside outfit after the German replaced Brendan Rodgers in October.

Writing in his Liverpool Echo column, Lawrenson expressed his doubts whether Benteke has a long-term future at the 18-time English champions.

“Long term Benteke’s probably not the answer as far as the manager is concerned but let’s trying to find a way of helping him which will eventually help our home form,” Lawrenson said.

“If and when we decide we’re going to go down a different route with a striker and Benteke gets sold then there’ll be quite a few teams will want to take him. Nobody is doubting his ability, he’s just a different centre-forward than what the manager envisages.

“But in the meantime we need to win some games.”

Benteke became Liverpool’s second most-expensive signing of all-time in the summer transfer window after Klopp’s predecessor Rodgers signed the Belgian in a £32.5m deal from Aston Villa.

The 25-year-old striker has scored six goals and has made three assists in 20 Premier League games for the Merseyside outfit so far this season.
