Michael Owen is backing Wayne Rooney to fire Sunderland to victory over Manchester United at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils head into the game looking to return to winning ways after the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser during the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Rooney has been in fine form for United in recent games and is set to start when Louis van Gaal’s men face the Black Cats this weekend.

And former United striker Owen is backing Rooney to play a key role in helping his side secure victory over Sam Allardyce’s side on Saturday.

Writing in his column for Bet Victor, Owen said: “I’m just about to leave for Manchester where I am due to interview the England and United captain Wayne Rooney ahead of their game with the Black Cats which you can see live on BT Sport.

“Rooney has scored five times and provided three assists in his last six Premier League games and he might be the difference again at the Stadium Of Light a ground where United remain unbeaten in the Premier League (won nine, drew four).”
