Patrick Kluivert has expressed his surprise that Manchester United have stuck with Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils progressed to the Europa League last 16 on Thursday night after a 5-1 victory over FC Midtjylland at Old Trafford.

If he didn’t have as big a name, maybe things would have been over for him much quicker

The 20-time English champions will face Liverpool in the next round over two legs at Anfield and Old Trafford in March for a place in the last eight.

Van Gaal’s side have won their last two games after United had secured victory in just two of their last six Premier League games.

Kluivert played under Van Gaal at Ajax and Barcelona during his playing career before he joined the 64-year-old coaching team’s at AZ Alkmaar and the Netherlands set-up.

However, the former Dutch striker admitted that Van Gaal has been fortunate to remain in the United job given their run of results.

“If his name were not Louis van Gaal, maybe he would have lost his job by now,” Kluivert told Daily Express.

“When you look at the previous guy at Man United [David Moyes], he was not given so much time.

“So if he didn’t have as big a name, maybe things would have been over for him much quicker.

“They still have chances to enjoy a good season, but we know the pressure of being at a club as big as Man United.

“You have to be successful or you cannot stay. From my experience working with him as a player and then an assistant coach,

“I still say Louis is one of the best managers in the game. He needs time and I hope they give it to him.”
