Patrick Kluivert says Memphis Depay has struggled to shoulder the expectations at Manchester United.

The 22-year-old produced one of his best United performances on Thursday night as the home side sealed a 5-1 victory over FC Midtjylland in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie on Thursday night.

Memphis scored his fifth European goal of the season in the dying minutes of the clash at Old Trafford to take his tally to seven in all competitions in his first season at United.

However, the Netherlands international has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League.

His former Netherlands assistant manager Kluivert explained why he thinks Memphis has failed to recreate his PSV Einhoven form at Old Trafford.

“We all had hopes that he would be a revelation and we all had a right to expect more than we have seen from him in his first season at United,” Kluivert told Daily Express.

“This is a massive step up for Memphis and it has been difficult for him that he has not always played every game.

“Sometimes he is on the bench, sometimes he starts. That does not give a player a lot of confidence and maybe that has affected him, but he still has time.

“Some players are the main men at their club, they go to a big club and it is not easy for them to accept it.”

Memphis moved to United in a £25m deal from Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven in May 2015 ahead of the summer transfer window.
