The five-time European Cup winners couldn’t break the deadlock in Germany on Thursday night despite manager Jurgen Klopp handing striker Daniel Sturridge his second successive start.
Liverpool brought on Divock Origi in the second half but Augsburg came closest to making the breakthrough but the woodwork denied Ji Dong-won.
The stalemate maintained Liverpool’s unbeaten record in this season’s Europa League after a run of two wins and four draws.
Liverpool goalkeeper Mignolet appeared to be pleased with the result ahead of the return leg at Anfield next Thursday.
Mignolet wrote on his Instagram page: “Goalless draw away from home in the #UEL next leg a week on Thursday at Anfield #fcalfc #YNWA”
The Reds will face Augsburg for a place in the last 16 next Thursday before Klopp’s side take on Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday 28 February.
