The Spain striker came within a whisker of putting the Blues ahead in the first half when his header was tipped onto the crossbar by PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.
Costa has shown some improved form in recent weeks and former Manchester United defender Ferdinand feels that the striker deserved credit for his performance against the Ligue 1 outfit.
Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Ferdinand said: “He [Costa] did a lot of running and put in a lot of effort.
“I think in the last few weeks he’s looked like the Costa of last season. Today, he was very, very good.
“He did a lot of good things. He looks like he’s got a yard of pace back as well, he’s running away from defenders. You wouldn’t have seen that earlier in the season.”
PSG took the lead when Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s free-kick deflected in off John Obi Mikel in the Chelsea wall.
The Blues drew level in first-half stoppage time when Mikel powered home from close range.
Edinson Cavani then came off the bench to restore the Ligue 1 side’s lead in the 78th minute to hand PSG the advantage heading into the return leg in London in three weeks’ time.
