Louis van Gaal secured a much-needed win in his Manchester United career after a 3-0 victory at Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup fifth round.

England centre-half Chris Smalling broke the deadlock in the 37th minute before Juan Mata extended the Red Devils’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Van Gaal’s side had suffered successive defeats ahead of their trip to the League One side but Jesse Lingard put the tie beyond doubt 29 minutes from time.
