Charlie Adam believes that Arsenal lack leadership on the pitch in the wake of their 3-2 loss to Manchester United.

The Gunners have faced plenty of criticism in recent days following the disappointment of their loss to the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal failed to click into gear against Louis van Gaal’s men and struggled to gain a foothold in the game as they slumped to a damaging defeat.

The result left Arsenal five points behind leaders Leicester heading into this week’s round of fixtures.

Many are saying that this is the north London side’s best chance of winning the Premier League title for many seasons.

However, Stoke City midfielder Adam feels that the Gunners often lack direction on the pitch.

Asked who he thinks Arsenal’s leaders are, Adam told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Nobody. There’s players on other teams where if you do something wrong you see them get dug out. I see [Alexis] Sanchez sometimes but he does it in the wrong way. He throws his arms in the air and things like that. He tries to get the best out of them.

“But there’s nobody like Glenn Whelan. If I do something wrong, he’ll dig me out. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t like me. It’s just he knows you’re better than what you are and sometimes you need that rollicking to spur you on.

“I don’t see it [at Arsenal]. I don’t see that type of player who gets to that stage where they want to have a go at somebody and try gee them up and get them going.”
