Trailing 2-0 from the first leg in London last month, Arsenal started brightly but the home side took the lead in the 18th minute when Neymar finished from close range.
Mohamed Elneny smashed home an equaliser in the 51st minute but Barcelona replied 15 minutes later when Luis Suarez struck a stunning volley.
And Lionel Messi added gloss to the scoreline with a dinked finish over David Ospina two minutes from time to wrap up a 5-1 aggregate win for Barcelona and book their place in the quarter-finals.
Speaking on BT Sport after the final whistle, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand said: “They had a go, that was all you could ask for from these players.
“They created chances, they didn’t finish them, but that’s what can happen.
“There are some positives. [Alex] Iwobi showed great promise – him and [Danny] Welbeck seemed to form a great partnership together, which seemed like something promising.
“We’ll see if they get rewarded in the next game when they play at the weekend.”
Arsenal now turn their attentions back to the Premier League and their trip to Everton on Saturday lunchtime.
