Mauricio Pochettino’s side were winless in their last three games after defeats by West Ham and Borussia Dortmund as well as a 2-2 stalemate with title rivals Arsenal.
However, Spurs made the trip to the Premier League’s basement club, and Dele Alli and Harry Kane combined as the Tottenham striker broke the deadlock before half-time.
The England were at it again in the second half as Kane sealed three points for the Lilywhites and helped Spurs to move to within two points of leaders Leicester City in the table.
Injured Belgium defender Vertonghen heaped praise on his Tottenham team-mates for racking up a much-needed win in the title race.
