Jurgen Klopp says he is pleased that Louis van Gaal has managed to get through a difficult spell at Manchester United.

The 64-year-old was contending with relentless speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford following back-to-back losses to Sunderland and FC Midtjylland in February.

United have won four of their last five games in all competitions, although the 20-time English champions lost 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Sunday.

However, Van Gaal has won all four of his games against United’s bitter rivals Liverpool since taking over the reins from David Moyes in May 2014.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference ahead of Liverpool’s clash against United in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash on Thursday, Klopp showed his support for the Red Devils boss.

“Van Gaal is one of the most successful managers in the world. I am pleased for him that he could change the situation a little bit,” Klopp said.

However, Klopp underlined his determination to ensure Van Gaal’s five-game winning run against Liverpool comes to an end on Thursday night.

Klopp added: “I don’t believe in enemies in football. I have absolutely no problem with Van Gaal but last thing I want is for him to win this.”

Liverpool and United are meeting for the first time in Europe in this season’s Europa League last 16.
