Jamie Carragher is hoping Liverpool can take a first-leg lead to Old Trafford ahead of their crunch Europa League last-16 clash against Manchester United on Thursday night.

The Reds head into their first ever European clash with United looking to build on their dramatic 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend.

United, meanwhile, are bidding to return to winning ways after the disappointment of their 1-0 loss to West Brom at The Hawthorns on Sunday.

Former Liverpool defender is expecting to see an evenly-matched game at Anfield in Thursday’s first leg, and says a 2-1 win would be a great result for the Reds on Merseyside.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Carragher said: “There’s very little between the two teams. I think Liverpool were far superior at Anfield and should have won. My one worry is Louis van Gaal’s record against Liverpool and in big games.

“Fans have been criticising him but he seems to do the job in big games. My worry is Van Gaal rather than the opposing players.

“It’s still the biggest game because they are the two biggest names in English football. It’s sad that they are both in the Europa League and it’s not a Champions League game. It’s like us watching a Barcelona v Real Madrid game in the Europa League, it just wouldn’t feel right.

“It’s a huge game and hopefully it’s a fixture that is deciding titles and European Cups in the next few years. If Liverpool can take a lead, even if it’s 2-1 and they score an away goal, I would bite your hand off.”

Enhanced odds: Get 7/1 on Liverpool to beat Man Utd

Louis van Gaal’s men have won their last four Premier League fixtures against Liverpool since a humiliating 3-0 home defeat in March 2014.
