Martin Keown has admitted that Arsenal appear to waver when the possibility of winning the Premier League title looms on the horizon.

The Gunners suffered a 2-1 defeat by Swansea City at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night as goals from Wayne Routledge and Ashley Williams cancelled out Joel Campbell’s opener.

Arsenal are six points behind Leicester City in the title race after back-to-back defeats by Manchester United and Swansea in their two games following a 2-1 win against the Foxes at The Emirates.

The Gunners came close to winning the Premier League title in 2013/14 season but faded away after Christmas, while the north Londoners excelled in the second half of the 2014/15 campaign.

Former Arsenal defender Keown, who was part of Arsene Wenger’s last squad to win the title in 2004, urged the Gunners manager to get to the root of his players’s perennial collapses.

“People talk about mentality and whether Arsenal always bottle it at this time of year. But last year from Christmas onwards they were excellent,” Keown wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“The trouble was, by the time they got going they were already out of the title race. It’s as if as soon as the prospect of a title is on the radar, things start to waver. That’s something Wenger has to get to the bottom of.”

Arsenal make the trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.
